Where we are

Palazzo Degli Abati is located in the Sasso Barisano and precisely in Via San Pietro Barisano, No. 27, easily reachable from Via Piave and Via Vincenzo D’Addozio.

Our hotel can be reached easily by car for loading and unloading luggage, and in the immediate surroundings you can find restaurants, pizzerias, pubs and cafes; our hotel is surrounded by many interesting sites of the city: the church of San Pietro Barisano, the ex dug quarry now auditorium  Casa Cava,  the gardens and the Church of St. Augustine; the Cathedral is literally in front of us and after a 5-minute walking you can reach the main square of Matera (Piazza Vittorio Veneto), always pleasantly busy until late.
The coordinates for GPS devices are as follows: latitude / longitude 40.66902453266985, 16.609429121017456 (Google Maps e OpenStreetMap).

If you arrive by car or motorcycle, from any direction, take the exit Matera 2 -Centro- follow the signs to the center and then to the Sassi. The Sassi have two driveways: Via D’Addozio and Via Bruno Buozzi. Our structure can be reached more easily from the Via D’Addozio. This is located near the Villa Comunale, along Via Piave. Immediately upon entering the Sasso Barisano from Via D’Addozio, shortly after the Church of St. Augustine, on the right there is Via San Pietro Barisano. We are in a little square: you can not miss us. Our exact address is Via San Pietro Barisano n27. If the navigation system has difficulties you can set Via D’Addozio. Our way is going down the right, clearly visible.

ZTL (Restricted Traffic Area) The entire area of the Sassi  is a Limited Traffic Area but our guests are allowed to access it for loading and unloading their luggage with a temporary pass. We’ll only need to know the licence plate number, the name of the owner/the rental company and the model of the car.

From the Adriatic coast: take the Bologna-Taranto highway until Bari North. Follow the directions to Altamura – Matera along the SS 99.
From the Tyrrhenian coast: take the Salerno – Reggio Calabria, exit at Sicignano degli Alburni. Continue up to Potenza, and then to Metaponto along the SS 407 called “Basentana” until you see the signals for Matera.

Palazzo degli Abati   is located in the Sassi, the UNESCO ancient historical area of Matera.

We are one of the most easily reachable hotels in the Sassi, by following the streets Via Piave and then Via D’Addozio.

The Sassi are within a Restricted Traffic Area (ZTL – Zona a traffico limitato in Italian), but as our guest you can drive through it to reach our property: you’ll be allowed to pass the ZTL once for the check in and once for the check-out to load and unload you luggage.

Then, you’ll need to move your car out of the ancient town, called Sassi, to search for parking, cause the parking lots in the Sassi area   are just for residents (“autorizzati”).

We usually suggest 3 alternative options for parking:

Option 1 –  You can drive your car to the hotel for the unload of your luggage and then get out of the Sassi/ZTL and search for a parking lot available at approximately 300 – 400 mts distance from the hotel (3 – 4 minutes walking). There are free parking lots  or parking lots at 0,70 cent per hour, except by night.

Option 2 You can drive your car to the hotel for the unload of your luggage and then have your car picked up and parked into a private parking garage.  This parking with the car valet can be reserved.

Option 3 – You can drive your car to the hotel for the unload of your luggage and then you can park by yourself in an undergroung garage about 400 mt far from our hotel (6 minutes walking). This park car can not be booked.

In any case, we inform you that you won’t need your car to visit the Sassi and the other most important tourist attractions as they are easily reachable on foot and the main part of them is in a pedestrian area.
